Does this sound familiar?
You are squeezed into a packed theater waiting eagerly for the
hottest movie of the year. The lights dim, the reel begins
to roll, and for two hours you watch helplessly as the characters
stumble from one obvious ambush to another. If that were
me, you say to yourself, I never would have made those
stupid mistakes.
Storyplaying gives you the opportunity
to prove that you are, indeed, smarter than those characters. It
is like creating your own fantastic movie, one with no script,
no budget, and no predetermined outcome. The perfect film with
you as the star.
The term “Storyplaying” is a combination
of two words: storytelling - the ability to weave amazing tales,
and roleplaying - the acting out (at least in your mind) of a
part in a scenario. With a storyplaying game, these two ideas
are melded into one style of play, with the storytelling being
the primary aspect of the game. You become a part of an ongoing
adventure, a constantly evolving universe. The creation of your
tale and its addition to the history of Lore: Uprising is of the
utmost importance in storyplaying.
Roleplaying is also important,
however it requires a little more explanation. For our purposes,
it is the means of participating in a storyplay adventure using
a rule set, a little equipment and a rule structure. You will
notice that ordinary game components such as gaming boards or
cards are missing. For the majority of roleplaying games, you
will only need a set of dice. The story takes place primarily
in your mind and gaming boards are only used when necessary. In
fact, the dice are only used to determine the outcome of specific
events, such as testing your skills or fighting in combat.
In other words, a storyplay adventure
involves several people as they play out the lives of their alter
egos in their imagination. Most of the time, records are kept
on paper and rolls of the dice are used to determine the consequences
of the actions of the characters. The random nature of trusting
the life of your character to the roll of a die adds to the excitement
of the game. However, the entire adventure is overseen by a referee
or “game master” as it is sometimes known. In Lore: Uprising,
this person is called the LoreMaster (or LM for short). It is
the LM who guides the characters through the adventure and weaves
together the story around you and your friends.
